FOCAL THERAPY FOR SMALL KIDNEY AND LOCALIZED PROSTATE TUMORS

Focal therapy is an advanced minimally invasive technique that uses a diode laser for the ablation(to destroy) of small localized tumours within the kidney and prostate.

Application - Advantages

It is based on the innovative Fusion technique that combines multiparametric MRI of the prostate with transrectal ultrasound or computed tomography for the kidney. Initially, images of the prostate or kidney and the suspicious site (tumour) are taken with MRI or CT scan. Then, with a sensor, we are guided threedimensionally,to the suspicious site for biopsy. Once the lesion is proven by histological examination to be cancerous, it is destroyed with extreme precision, with a needle that carries the fibre of the diode laser through the skin without incision, leaving intact the healthy cells and tissues of the prostate and kidney. As a result, not all the usual complications (incontinence, erectile dysfunction, etc.) that we encounter with prostate cancer surgery or heavy bleeding and prolonged anesthesia in kidney surgery occur as it is performed under local anesthesia. Usually, the patient leaves the clinic after a few hours. This technique has been performed in our clinic since 2016, making the Metropolitan General one of the pioneering and most important centres in this field worldwide.

Scientific interest

The scientific interest of the Clinic is mainly focused on:

Urethroplasty, caused by fractures in the pelvic region (subsequent to road accidents), complete urethral rupture, as well as urethral strictures after endoscopic procedures.
Congenital hypospadias restoration.
Phalloplasty, either due to micropenis or penile deformation.
Male and female urinary incontinence managements with the use of minimally invasive surgical techniques, such as the placement of artificial sphincter or tension-free vaginal tapes.
Restoration of urinary tract fistulas (vesicovaginally, ureterovaginally and rectovesically) resulting from surgeries or pelvic radiotherapy.
Management and treatment of the Peyronie’s disease.
Treatment of specialized and challenging cases of erectile dysfunction with the implantation of penile prostheses.
Lastly, our knowledge on the most modern diagnostic procedures on erectile dysfunction and male infertility enables us to effectively address them, applying microsurgical techniques for their repair (e.g. epididymal anastomosis, etc)

Robot-assisted Surgery

Our Clinic accommodates the da Vinci robotic surgical system which facilitates the mechanical operation of microscopic surgical instrumentation. The da Vinci system has multiple characteristics which help surgeons-operators perform certain laparoscopic procedures in a particularly easy manner, with better quality and of course less problems for the patient. A surgeon can detect, accurately target or avoid the object of interest. For patients, the core advantages of laparoscopy are: smaller incisions, smaller scars, less infections, shorter hospitalization and faster resumption of everyday activities and rhythms.
