Ultrasound is a painless, safe, and non-invasive imaging method that uses no radiation. It allows for the real-time evaluation of various organs and tissues. The Ultrasound Lab at Metropolitan General utilizes high-resolution systems for all types of ultrasounds and Color Doppler (Triplex) examinations.
The Ultrasound Laboratory offers elastography as a supplementary application, which serves as a significant diagnostic aid in the differential diagnosis of benign vs. malignant tumors. This is primarily utilized in breast conditions and secondarily in other organs, such as the investigation of thyroid nodules.
Under ultrasound guidance, the department performs fine-needle aspirations and core biopsies of organs (including the breast, thyroid, and prostate), fluid collections drainage, hook wire placements, and intra-articular injections (e.g., in the glenohumeral and hip joints) for MR and/or CT arthrography, as well as therapeutic injections into joints and soft tissues.

General Ultrasound
Our department performs the following ultrasound examinations:
- Thyroid Ultrasound
- Upper and Lower Abdominal Ultrasound
- KUB Ultrasound (Kidneys-Ureters-Bladder)
- Soft Tissue Ultrasound
- Carotid & Vertebral Artery Color Doppler (Triplex)
- Temporal Artery Color Doppler (Triplex)
- Upper and Lower Extremity Arterial Color Doppler (Triplex)
- Upper and Lower Extremity Venous Color Doppler (Triplex)
- Liver Elastography
- Quantification of Hepatic Steatosis (Fatty Liver)
- Scrotal Ultrasound and Color Doppler (Triplex)
Gynecological & Breast Ultrasound
Gynecological ultrasounds are essential examinations for evaluating the health of the female reproductive system. At Metropolitan General, using high-resolution ultrasound technology, physicians can accurately examine the uterus, ovaries, and other anatomical structures, providing a safe and immediate diagnosis.
Transabdominal Ultrasound
Performed by placing the ultrasound transducer over the abdominal area.
Used for:
- A general overview of the uterus and ovaries
- Identifying cysts, fibroids, or inflammations
- Early pregnancy check-ups
Note: A full bladder is often required for better visualization.
Transvaginal Ultrasound
Provides a more detailed and close-up view of the reproductive organs.
Ideal for:
- Detailed evaluation of the uterus, endometrium, and ovaries
- Diagnosis of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
- Ovulation assessment and cycle monitoring
- Investigation of pelvic pain or abnormal bleeding
Performed with an empty bladder.
Cardiology Ultrasound
The Cardiovascular Imaging Laboratory at Metropolitan General is one of the few in Greece and Europe to be accredited by the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging (EACVI) of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC).
This accreditation reflects the scientific expertise of our staff, the implementation of advanced clinical protocols, and the high standard of our infrastructure (equipment, facilities, etc.). The certification covers all three types of echocardiography: Transthoracic, Transesophageal, and Stress Echo.
The Laboratory performs the full spectrum of imaging and diagnostic cardiac examinations using cutting-edge medical technology.
Imaging Examinations
- Transthoracic Echocardiogram (Heart Triplex): Utilizing the latest techniques (3D imaging and 2D strain) when required.
- Transesophageal Echocardiogram: Using a 3D probe for three-dimensional imaging (essential for evaluating valvular diseases and other cardiac conditions).
- Stress Echocardiogram: Performed via intravenous dobutamine administration or physical exercise, with or without the use of a contrast agent (Contrast Echo).
Diagnostic Tests
- Standard 12-lead Electrocardiogram (ECG)
- Treadmill Stress Test
- Holter Monitor (24-hour or 48-hour heart rate monitoring)
- Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (24-hour Holter)
