NUTRITION & CLINICAL DIETETICS

Our Department’s key concern is the application of Clinical Dietetics in patients, with the aim to treat any patient in the most comprehensive, fast, personalized and successful way.

The core responsibilities of the staff of the Department of Nutrition include:

  • Cooperation with all Departments and Central Kitchen staff.
  • Supervising food service and strict adherence to nutritional guidance provided for patient meals planning.
  • Inspection of food preparation conditions.
  • Daily visits to a large number of inpatients, aiming at direct contact with the patient and his/her environment.
  • Provision of indicative nutritional guidance to all discharged patients (subject to their inpatient diet).
  • When ordered by the attending physician, Mr. Karafyllidis, Chief of the Department, drafts a personalized nutrition plan for the patient, with a view of improving his/her nutritional profile and adding up to faster recover.
  • In close cooperation with the attending physicians and ICU medical staff, the Department provides personalized nutrition plans for enteral and parenteral nutrition in patients with feeding problems and malnutrition.
  • In case of patients with feeding problems, the Department’s staff assesses the degree of malnutrition (Nutritional Risk Screening, NRS) and, based on scientific data and international standard practices, plans the nutritional intervention scheme.
  • Lastly, Mr. Karafyllidis is in charge of nutritional consultation-support services at Metropolitan General’s Outpatient Department (by appointment only).

  • Nutrition and Cancer
    Supporting patient nutrition and immune system, managing treatment side-effects, growing muscle tissue and dealing with malaise in cancer.
  • Nutrition and Weight Loss
    Drafting of personalized nutritional plans, suitable for balanced weight loss, metabolic balance achievement, maximum fat burning and skin firmness maintenance.
  • Dietary Behavior Change
    Detection and managing of the cause behind body weight increase.
  • Cardiovascular Diseases
    Management of hypercholesterolemia & Hypertension
  • Gastrointestinal Disorders
    Diaphragmatic hernia with esophagitis, gastroesophageal reflux, gastrectomy, dumping syndrome, celiac disease, ulcer colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease etc.
  • Endocrine – Metabolic Disorders
    Diabetes type Ι, ΙΙ. Management and treatment of hyperglycemia/hypoglycemia. Management of gout and elevated uric acid.
  • Renal Failure
    Drafting of personalized nutritional plans for patients with acute, chronic renal failure (no dialysis) and end-stage renal failure (dialysis).
  • Nutritional Risk Detection
    A tool to detect and assess patient nutritional status.
  • Artificial Nutrition
    Supportive nutritional plans for patients manifesting difficulty or complete inability to be orally fed, considering the administration of complimentary and/or enteral and/or parenteral nutrition.
  • Inpatient Nutrition Support
    Nutritional evaluation, assessment and support in the hospital setting.
  • Anorexia Nervosa & Bulimia
    Drafting of nutritional plans.
  • Nutrition and Pregnancy
    Drafting of personalized nutritional plans to support pregnant women, adapted to major development fetal changes during pregnancy.
  • Nutrition and Breastfeeding
    Drafting of personalized nutritional plans, tailored to cover the increased needs of a breastfeeding mother, while allowing for the loss of the excess weight gained during pregnancy.

Measurements performed at the Department:

  • Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis
    Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis measures muscle tissue, adipose tissue and body hydration.
  • Ultrasound Body Fat Measurement
    This technique allows for the observation of local tissue (muscle and adipose).
  • Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)
    BMR calculates the calories you need at rest, as well as your body’s energy needs.

ADVANCED PATIENT NUTRITION

The innovative individualized nutrition care service includes the preparation and provision of individualized nutrition plans, which are specially planned in order to meet the unique nutritional requirements, both in terms of nutrients and taste, of each individual patient who is hospitalized in the Clinic.

This service which has been created by Mr. Eumenis Karafyllides, Director of the Nutrition – Clinical Dietetics Department, aims at the best possible nutritional care and satisfaction of patient.

The new service consists of the following:

  • The patients, after their admission in the hospital room, are informed by the competent Metropolitan General’s clinical dietitian about the available standard meals (free or special diet) which are provided on the basis of the recommendations of the attending physician and the condition of their health.
  • The patients describe their nutritional preferences, actually participating in planning their meal plan.
  • The individualized nutrition plan is always implemented following the approval by the attending physician.
  • Keeping an everyday personal communication with the dietitian after every meal, patients are able to assess and change the ingredients and the quantities of meals.
  • If and when found necessary, patients are granted the potential to be fed with the presence of the dietician, in order to better assess the nutrition process.
  • Before leaving the Metropolitan General, the patients are provided individualized written and oral nutritional advices in order to enhance their nutritional profile on the long-term and lead to their quicker recovery.

Metropolitan General, by its individualized nutritional care service, contributes further in establishing a nutritional scheme aiming to the long-term enhancement of each patient’s health.
