Metropolitan General Pathology Laboratory is TEMOS and ISO 9001: 2015 certified and accredited for its services by the National Accreditation System - ESYD (No. P.1124) according to the international standard ELOT EN ISO 15189: 2012.
The Pathology Laboratory is a key part of the Metropolitan General. Complete and documented histological examination is the cornerstone for the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of the patient.
Its highly specialized medical and technological staff daily processes a wide range of specimens from small biopsies to large surgical preparations in a modern and well-equipped laboratory.
Diagnostic access is accomplished by means of immunohistochemical, histochemical and molecular / gene controls by providing specific information for the determination of prognostic-predictive factors and markers for targeted cancer therapy.
Indicatively, we mention:
- Determination of hormone receptors (ΕR-PR).
- Determination of Her2 oncogenes with the fluorescent in situ hybridization method (FISH/CISH).
- Determination of epidermal growth factor receptors (EGFR).
- Control of gene mutations (K-ras).
The ability for quick histological diagnosis during surgery (frozen section biopsy) provides important information and guidance.
The Laboratory also applies the sentinel lymph node method with fullsuccess, having the Certification of Royal College of Surgery in England.
It is also subject to regular external quality controls by internationally recognized UKNEQAS and LABQUALITY (Finland) for both its diagnostic competence and its techniques.
Finally, the physicians of the Laboratory are actively involved in research programs - mainly in the field of oncology - as well as in Greek and international conferences while their work is published in the many medical journals.
