The Department of Rectal - Pelvic Surgery is a specialized department in tumors and benign diseases of the rectum, the pelvis and the pelvic floor. The Director is an internationally known colorectal surgeon, Mr Savvas Papagrigoriadis MD MSc FRCS (Eng) MASCRS, Consultant Colorectal Surgeon, Director of King’s College Hospital, London for 20 years & Senior Lecturer King’s College London.
The Department implements all the treatments according to the Guidelines of Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and of American Society of Colon & Rectal Surgeons.
For the treatment of rectal cancer, the Department implements procedures without colostomy (Organ -Sparing Surgery) using the appropriate staging techniques in combination with radiotherapy. For rectal cancer staging, a three-dimensional endorectal ultrasound is implemented, to select the tumors that are appropriate for T.E.M.S endoscopic surgery.
The combination of radiotherapy and TEMS endoscopic surgery in early tumors without lymph nodes makes possible the endoscopic resection without colostomy.
Another «Organ Sparing” technique is the transrectal total mesorectal excision -“Transanal TME/ TaTME”, which we applied first in Greece.
For the post-operative fast and regular recovery of the patients, “Εnhanced Recover” anaesthesia and post-operative pain-killing techniques are used, based on the guidelines of “Enhanced Recovery After Surgery Society -ERAS Society”.
Our rationale:
Surgery is not a matter of technique. It is a combination of:
- Art
- Holistic approach with respect to human body and patient’s soul.
