The 3rd Department of Internal Medicine at Metropolitan General runs a Hepatology (Liver) Clinic headed by Dimitrios Karagiannakis, MD, PhD, Consultant of Internal Medicine and Hepatology, Deputy Chief of the 3rd Department of Internal Medicine, Academic Fellow of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA).
At the Hepatology Clinic, we investigate all symptoms and diseases in the field of Hepatology through multidisciplinary and comprehensive treatment approaches. Our Clinic manages patients suffering from:
- Chronic hepatitis B and C
- Alcoholic liver disease
- Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease
- Autoimmune liver diseases (autoimmune hepatitis)
- Cholestatic liver diseases (primary biliary cholangitis, primary sclerosing cholangitis)
- Metabolic liver diseases (hemochromatosis, Wilson's disease, etc.) Drug-induced liver injury
- Hepatocellular carcinoma
- Bile duct cancer (cholangiocarcinoma)

Our Clinic provides ultrasound studies of the liver, its vessels and bile ducts, as well as Liver Elastography, using the 2D-Shear Wave Elastography method, a non-invasive, safe, quick, and highly accurate diagnostic method, which has been internationally demonstrated as crucial for the correct and comprehensive assessment of the severity of all-cause liver damage.
The Hepatology Clinic of the 3rd Department of Internal Medicine works closely with the Departments of Gastroenterology, Radiology, and Interventional Radiology, as well as with groups of Oncologists (cancer specialists) in Metropolitan General to provide the best possible and most comprehensive treatment to patients suffering from liver diseases.
