Research
- Research on the treatment of lithiasis using ureteroscopy or case-specific SWL (impacted lithiasis, urinary diversion), on economic factors of lithiasis treatment and possible complications (post-SWL hypertension) with corresponding publications in international journals. In particular, research in cooperation with the Lithotripsy Unit of the 2nd Department of Urology, University of Athens, “Sismanogleio” Hospital and the Hypertension Clinic of the Therapeutic Department of the University of Athens (“Alexandra” University General Hospital) for the study of the Effect of Lithotripsy on Blood Pressure. The study was the subject of his doctoral thesis and the results were published in the Journal of Endourology and in Greek and International Conferences proceedings. At the 20th World Congress on Endourology & Shockwave in Genoa (Italy), 19-22 September 2002, it was presented among the Highlights of the Conference as Particularly Interesting.
- Studies on surgical techniques (bladder neck preservation following radical prostatectomy, ureteral stenoses following radical prostatectomy, modified neobladder due to ileum for urinary diversion following radical cystectomy) with respective publications in international journals.
- Research on the quality of life (QoL) of urological patients (impact of age, prostate procedures and orthotopic neobladder compared to heterotopic urinary diversion). Respective publications were also included in international journals.
- Clinicolaboratory research on the usefulness on indexes, such as p53, CD44, CA 125, EMA on prostatic and renal cancers. Respective publications were also made in international journals. Research on the penile suspensory ligaments was conducted at the Descriptive Anatomy Lab. The research results were published:
- at the 16th Video Urology World Congress, Athens 23- 5/6/2005: “Augmentation Phalloplasty”.
- at the 8th Congress of the European Society of Sexual Medicine, Copenhagen, 4-7 December 2005: “Penis lengthening with girth enhancement: The surgical technique seen from the «inside» together with human cadaver detail anatomical presentation”. V. Protogerou et al.
- a relative paper was published in Current Urology: V. PROTOGEROU et al. “Long term results in augmentation phalloplasty through a 2-cm incision: technique, anatomical description in a human cadaver and satisfaction assessment.” Current Urology 2007; 1:174-178
- 2007: participation as a researcher in an international, multicenter study on the use of Botox in neurogenic bladders. Within the framework of the Andrology Clinic operation, a research protocol was developed for penile enlargement with the use of the “Andropenis” device: “Safety and efficacy protocols study of the “Andropenis” penile enlargement device in patients with congenital or acquired (Peyronie’s disease) short penis or in patients suffering from dysmorphophobia”.
