Metropolitan General about to start a specialized unit

“Millions of physically disabled people all over the world now have reasonable expectations” said the Portuguese Professor Carlo Lima and his Greek Associates Messrs D. Prokopakis and Ch. Gogos during a Study Day held at Metropolitan General yesterday. The Study Day was aimed at the management of physically disabled patients with spinal injuries (cervical and thoracic parts), mostly caused by car accidents.

This medical case is of particular importance for our country, as physically disabled patients due to car accidents exceed 500,000, with 500 new patients added on an annual basis. In comparison, the American rate reaches 250,000, with 11,000 new cases added every year. In this context, Metropolitan General is about to establish a model management unit for such cases under the supervision of the Portuguese Professor Carlo Lima, an initiative that is absent in the private healthcare sector.

According to the method of Mr. Lima, stem cells are harvested from the patient’s own nose, which are then transplanted in the spinal lesion to promote nervous tissue refunctioning.

The renowned Portuguese Professor, along with specialized teams of local surgeons, has organized and approved more than one hundred cases worldwide.

Restoration-physiotherapy is a key component, both pre- and post-operatively.

It should be noted that Professor Carlo Lima has been studying this method for over 18 years, 2001 being the year he first ever applied it. In our country, the highly-esteemed Professor Carlo Lima has entered into partnership with Metropolitan General. His direct assistants shall be Messrs D. Prokopakis and Ch. Gogos, who shall be present during the first procedures to be executed in Metropolitan General. These surgeries are highly delicate, require physicians in two specialties (ENTs and Neurosurgeons), and, globally, are performed under the direct supervision of the Portuguese Professor.

During the presentation, emphasis was placed on localized neurogenesis, while the report of the results of this pioneering method, which were demonstrated both via visual materials and patients’ relatives’ testimonials, where of great significance. It is noted that the first Greek to have been operated by Mr. Lima is Mr. Dionysis Troianos from the island of Kephalonia.

Mr. Lima answered various questions regarding other Chinese and Russian methods applied, for which, as he stated, no scientific works exist.

Mr. Lima’s speech was attended by professors of medicine, chiefs of NHS and private Departments of Neurosurgery, as well as relatives of patients that were operated or scheduled for operation. Also, the event was attended by Mr. Dimitriadis, President of Physically Disabled People Society and Delegate of Special Olympics athletes.
