SURGERIES FOR THE TREATEMENT OF EPILEPSY WERE TOTALLY SUCCESSFUL!

A new hope for 100,000 patients

The two surgical procedures, conducted by the Department of Epilepsy Investigation and Epilepsy Surgery at Metropolitan General (264, Messogeion Av, Cholargos) for the treatment of epilepsy, were totally successful. The surgeries were performed by the Heads of the Department, Mr. Adamantios G. Mavrakis, Neurosurgeon, and Mr. Christos Baltogiannis, Neurologist-Epileptologist.

The first patient (female, 42 years), whose drug-resistant epilepsy was surgically managed, had been subjected to selective amygdalohippocampectomy (SAH), accompanied by intraoperative cortical recording, by ipsilateral temporal polectomy.

The second patient (female, 19 years) had been suffering from gradually deteriorating drug-resistant epilepsy for the past 9 years. Following the preoperative tests, and the analysis and interpretation of the results, the patient was considered a good candidate for surgical treatment. Due to the complexity of her case, her treatment comprised two stages; at the first stage, we put electrodes in her brain cortex to ensure surgical accuracy and, at the second stage, we performed SAH and frontal topectomy.

Both surgeries were totally successful, given that both patients had no seizures at all during their hospital stay and after their discharge (4 and 2 months, respectively, a fact considered indicative of surgical success).

In Greece, it is estimated that more than 100,000 people suffer from Epilepsy and approximately 1 in 5 cases are surgically treatable.

Metropolitan General’s Department of Epilepsy Investigation and Epilepsy Surgery is the only specialized private Department in Greece to fully investigate Epilepsy, conduct all required tests (MRI, fMRI, Video-EEG, SPECT, Tractography) and perform epilepsy surgeries. Based on international scientific protocols, the Department’s specialized staff daily examines and investigates patients suffering from Epilepsy. Good candidates for Epilepsy surgical treatment are chosen following the completion of all specialized tests, always adhering to strict international guidelines.
