A comprehensive support system for oncology patients.
At Metropolitan General, comprehensive and specialized services are provided for the investigation, diagnosis, therapeutic management, and supportive care of neoplastic diseases. The most advanced therapies are individually tailored and applied according to international guidelines, adapted to each patient’s genomic and overall health profile, as well as to the histopathological and molecular characteristics of their disease, at every stage of treatment.
Types of treatment
Treatment options include the latest therapeutic protocols for chemotherapy regimens, hormone therapy, immunotherapy, biological therapies, targeted therapies, as well as locoregional therapies such as chemoembolization, radiofrequency tumor ablation (RF ablation), microwave ablation, cryoablation, or combinations thereof.
Treatments that do not require prolonged hospitalization are administered at the Clinic’s One Day Clinic (O.D.C.), in a comfortable and patient-friendly environment, under the supervision of the attending physicians and highly trained nursing staff specialized in the care of oncology patients.
In certain cases, hospitalization is required for the administration of chemotherapy, including high-dose chemotherapy with autologous stem cell rescue, performed under special conditions in high-safety isolation rooms.
Collaboration with Other Departments
A holistic approach to cancer care is achieved through the close collaboration of the Medical Oncology Unit with the Oncology Clinics, Hematologic Oncology Clinics, Surgical Oncology Clinics, and the Breast Center of Metropolitan General.
In addition, the Unit is supported by the Central Laboratories, the Pathology Laboratory, Medical Imaging Departments, the Interventional Radiology and Neuroradiology Departments, the Nuclear Medicine Department, as well as by the state-of-the-art radiotherapy units of the hospitals within the Hellenic Healthcare Group.
Leading Scientific Staff
The Clinic’s medical team combines outstanding scientific expertise with extensive clinical experience in the management of a large number of oncology patients. This, together with continuous medical education, ensures the delivery of the most up-to-date oncological care.
The active participation of the medical staff in international oncology congresses and scientific events through presentations, announcements, and publications, as well as their involvement in research programs either as participating investigators or principal investigators, continuously enhances their scientific and clinical excellence for the benefit of patients.
The management of oncology cases is supervised by the Clinic’s Oncology Board, where physicians from all relevant specialties collaborate and jointly determine the most effective and holistic treatment approach, always in accordance with the latest international developments and scientific data.
Innovative Clinical Protocols
The Unit secures and implements pioneering clinical treatment protocols:
- Through early access programs to internationally approved therapies that have not yet been incorporated into routine clinical practice in Greece (Open Access Programs and Named Patient Programs)
- Through international clinical trials (Phase I, II, III, and IV), organized and conducted in full compliance with European regulations and Greek legislation
This provides oncology patients with immediate access to the most advanced and up-to-date therapies, as well as to promising and innovative treatment approaches.
All the above establish the Medical Oncology Unit of Metropolitan General as a pioneering department in the field of Oncology in Greece, fostering international collaborations and continuously integrating scientific advancement into clinical practice.
