International standards, cutting-edge technology, comprehensive care
The Breast Center at Metropolitan General is a model center of excellence, fully aligned with international standards. It provides high-quality, comprehensive services for breast health, covering all stages from prevention and early diagnosis to treatment and reconstruction.
It is staffed by a multidisciplinary team including breast-specialized radiologists, internationally recognized breast surgeons, experienced nursing staff, and highly trained technologists.
The Center places strong emphasis on early diagnosis, which significantly improves prognosis. Patients can undergo, within a single visit:
- A complete imaging assessment (breast ultrasound, elastography, digital mammography, tomosynthesis)
- Clinical examination and evaluation of imaging findings by a breast surgeon
- If required, immediate diagnosis and confirmation of any detected lesion
Its goal is the holistic and comprehensive management of breast diseases. For this reason, it collaborates closely with specialists from multiple disciplines, including:
- Medical oncologists
- Plastic surgeons
- Pathologists
- Nuclear medicine physicians
- Gynecologists
- Interventional radiologists
- Psychologists
- Clinical dietitians
- Physiotherapists
The Center is equipped with state-of-the-art medical technology, including the globally leading Mammomat B. brilliant system by Siemens Healthineers, ensuring a highly accurate and rapid diagnosis.
The Breast Center accepts referrals from the National Health Organization (EOPYY) for digital mammography and is an accredited provider within the national annual breast screening program “Fofi Gennimata”.
Comprehensive Breast Care
Prevention-Early Diagnosis
Advanced Breast Imaging including:
- Low-dose digital mammography with spot compression and magnification views
- Tomosynthesis (3D mammography)
- Contrast-enhanced digital mammography
- Breast ultrasound-Elastography
- Breast MRI
- Breast outpatient clinics for clinical examination by a breast surgeon
- Genetic testing for women with a personal or family history of breast/ovarian cancer, in collaboration with the Clinic’s Central Laboratories and the Molecular Biology & Cytogenetics Center A-Lab of Hellenic Healthcare Group
Interventional Diagnostic Procedures
- Stereotactic biopsy:
An advanced, minimally invasive technique for diagnosing suspicious, non-palpable breast lesions without surgery - Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA)
- Core biopsy:
Percutaneous, minimally invasive needle biopsy with or without ultrasound guidance - Preoperative localization of non-palpable lesions using a wire under mammographic or ultrasound guidance, enabling precise surgical removal
- Aspiration of cysts and drainage of abscesses, with fluid culture in collaboration with the Microbiology Laboratory
- Cytological examination of breast specimens
Close collaboration with the Pathology Department ensures fast and reliable histological diagnosis
Management-Treatment
- Sentinel lymph node biopsy:
A specialized minimally invasive procedure for axillary lymph node evaluation, performed in collaboration with the Nuclear Medicine Department, avoiding unnecessary lymph node dissection and its complications - Placement of a marker prior to neoadjuvant chemotherapy
A pioneering technique applied in selected breast cancer patients requiring preoperative chemotherapy, ensuring accurate tumor localization during surgery after tumor shrinkage - Modern breast oncologic surgery using oncoplastic techniques, ensuring both effective cancer treatment and excellent aesthetic outcomes
- Reconstructive breast surgery for immediate restoration after mastectomy, using all modern techniques
- Collaboration with the Medical Oncology (Chemotherapy) Unit
- Collaboration with Hellenic Healthcare Group hospitals (Metropolitan Hospital and Hygeia) for radiotherapy
Support – Rehabilitation
- Psychological support for patients and their families
- Lymphedema Unit within the Physiotherapy Department, staffed by specialized physiotherapists
Advanced Breast Imaging Technology
Mammomat B. brilliant system
The Breast Center at Metropolitan General is equipped with the Mammomat B. brilliant system by Siemens Healthineers, a cutting-edge solution for breast cancer diagnosis combining speed, high resolution, and innovative technologies.
It features Platinum Tomo, an advanced wide-angle (50°) tomosynthesis technology, the fastest of its kind globally, with a scan of time of approximately 5 seconds, producing high-quality 3D images.
The Premia reconstruction algorithm, incorporating artificial intelligence (AI), reduces image noise and optimizes image quality while maintaining very low radiation dose.
Additional features include:
- Automatic breast density assessment
- PRIME technology for low radiation exposure
- Contrast-enhanced mammography (TiCEM) using a titanium filter for improved lesion detection and characterization
Thus, the additional time and cost of an MRI can be avoided.
The system also includes personalized breast compression technology, adapting to each patient’s anatomy for a more comfortable examination experience
High-resolution Ultrasound-Elastography
Dedicated high-resolution ultrasound system for breast imaging, with strain and shear-wave elastography, providing valuable support in differentiating benign and malignant lesions
Advanced Breast MRI & MRI-guided Biopsy
With two state-of-the-art MRI scanners (1.5T and 3T) and specialized multi-channel breast coils, the Center offers highly detailed imaging using advanced techniques such as diffusion, spectroscopy, and dynamic contrast imaging.
Image analysis through specialized workstations enhances the detection and characterization of lesions not visible on mammography or ultrasound
