Our Hemodialysis Unit, one of the largest and most advanced units in the country, provides a comprehensive therapeutic approach to kidney diseases in accordance with international standards of quality and safety. Operating within the Clinic, it offers the advantage of 24-hour coverage by all medical specialties, as well as full laboratory support. The Unit is equipped with 32 state-of-the-art dialysis machines and has the capacity to serve up to 96 patients daily.
It also features a dedicated Plasmapheresis Department equipped with a high-technology double-filtration plasmapheresis system for the treatment of immunological and hematological disorders.

Unit Services & Facilities
The Unit is located in a specially designed wing on the 2nd floor of the Clinic’s New Building, in modern, bright, and spacious facilities.
Specifically, it includes:
- Two large hemodialysis rooms
- A separate hemodialysis room for patients with Hepatitis B (HBV)
- A dedicated surgical suite for minor surgical procedures
- Waiting areas and dining facilities for patients and accompanying persons
The comfortable and pleasant stay of patients is a primary priority. The Unit is equipped with electronically adjustable beds and chairs, individual televisions, while free Wi-Fi, light meals, and parking facilities are also provided to patients.
All hemodialysis modalities are performed, including conventional hemodialysis, hemodiafiltration, and online hemodiafiltration, using the latest-generation equipment:
- Advanced hemodialysis systems that provide the safest, most effective, and highest-quality treatment. These systems also offer real-time monitoring of critical dialysis parameters (online monitoring) and individualized treatment customization
- Reverse osmosis water treatment systems with continuous water purity monitoring
- Latest-generation low-flux and high-flux dialysis filters
- Bicarbonate-based dialysis solutions
The Unit’s cutting-edge equipment, combined with strict infection control programs and internationally recognized hemodialysis treatment protocols, guarantees patient safety.
Patients remain under the close supervision of highly experienced nursing and medical staff selected according to strict professional criteria. Medical personnel are present during every dialysis session and remain available 24 hours a day to manage any emergency situation. Daily psychological support is also available, while patients’ specialized nutritional requirements are covered by the Clinic’s Dietetics Department.
The Unit’s nephrologists perform highly specialized procedures, including percutaneous kidney biopsy (fine-needle biopsy), placement of temporary hemodialysis catheters (subclavian or jugular), and thrombosed graft repair in collaboration with the Clinic’s vascular surgeons and interventional radiologists. In parallel, they monitor patients who have undergone or are candidates for kidney transplantation.
Comprehensive Care
Operating within Metropolitan General, the Hemodialysis Unit is supported on a 24-hour basis by physicians of all specialties, as well as by the Clinic’s departments and laboratories.
The Unit works closely with the Interventional Radiology and Vascular Surgery Departments for the immediate management of vascular access complications or the creation of new vascular access sites. The Blood Donation Department can cover every transfusion requirement, while the Multipurpose Intensive Care Unit, among the first units in Greece to implement continuous hemodiafiltration and plasmapheresis techniques, possesses the expertise and specialization required for the immediate treatment of nephrology emergencies.
Plasmapheresis Department
The Unit is among the few Hemodialysis Units in Greece equipped with a high-technology plasmapheresis system for the therapeutic management of various diseases.
Specifically, it treats:
- Nephrological diseases (rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis, vasculitis, etc.)
- Neurological diseases (multiple sclerosis, demyelinating disorders, etc.)
- Immunological diseases (autoimmune disorders, pemphigus, etc.)
- Hematological diseases (macroglobulinemia, multiple myeloma, hemolytic uremic syndrome, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, etc.)
- Rheumatological diseases (systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, vasculitis, etc.)
The Department also performs:
- Preparation of kidney transplant recipients (management of donor-recipient blood group incompatibility and positive cytotoxic antibodies)
- Liver failure support (artificial liver therapy) and treatment of hepatological diseases (fulminant hepatitis, acute liver failure, chronic hepatitis C, etc.)
- Lipid and cholesterol removal (lipid apheresis) in cases of hypercholesterolemia for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases
