Central Laboratories
The Central Laboratories of Metropolitan General cover a wide range of diagnostic testing and comprise the Units of Clinical Microbiology, Blood Bank, Biochemistry, Hematology, Immunology/Hormones, Molecular Biology, and Specialized Testing.
They are equipped with state-of-the-art, high-specification technology and a Laboratory Information System (LIS), operating 24 hours a day, and play a key role in supporting clinicians in the diagnosis and treatment of patients.
The laboratories are staffed by highly trained and experienced personnel (scientific, paramedical, and administrative), capable of delivering services characterized by speed, accuracy, and quality. Comprehensive information is provided regarding diagnostic tests, including guidance on the appropriate type of biological specimen and collection procedures, as well as clinical guidance for physicians, nurses, and patients, and interpretation of test results.
The Central Laboratories are certified according to EN ISO 9001:2015, as well as the TEMOS Quality System, which focuses on International Patient Services and Medical Tourism. These certifications demonstrate not only the implementation of quality systems, but also the laboratory’s technical competence in adhering to strict operational procedures and testing methodologies, ensuring accurate and comparable results.
In addition, the laboratories collaborate with reference centers and research groups in Greece and across Europe.
All departments perform daily Internal Quality Control and participate in External Quality Control programs at regular intervals, in accordance with international and national standards (Bio-Rad, Hellenic Society of External Quality Assessment in Laboratory Medicine [ESEAP], Hellenic Society of Hematology [HSH], EQAS, Medical School of the University of Athens – Microbiology Laboratory).
Blood Donation Unit
As part of the implementation of a centralized blood management program, the Metropolitan General Blood Donation Unit has related to the National Blood Transfusion Center to ensure adequate blood supply coverage.
The Unit’s primary objective is to ensure the availability of safe and sufficient blood, including in emergency cases requiring transfusion.
