The Ophthalmology Clinic of Metropolitan General covers the entire spectrum of disorders of the visual system. It is staffed by highly esteemed physicians with many years of experience in major hospitals in Greece as well as internationally renowned centres abroad.
Complex cases and rare conditions are reviewed by a specialized Scientific Council, consisting of professors of ophthalmology and the Director of the Clinic.
Metropolitan General is one of the few centres in Greece with high expertise in the management of diabetic retinopathy, thyroid eye disease, as well as disorders of the visual pathway and the orbit.
Modern Laser Treatments
State-of-the-art laser technologies are used to deliver innovative ophthalmic treatments that are minimally invasive, painless, effective, and completed within a few minutes (5–10 minutes).
More specifically, Metropolitan General provides the following advanced equipment:
- Diode Laser with innovative Micropulse technology, which does not damage tissue, for the treatment of glaucoma. This is an interventional therapeutic method that can be repeated whenever necessary without tissue damage, allowing rapid recovery and a quick return to daily activities.
- SLT Laser (Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty), a high-precision treatment used to treat open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension. This advanced, non-thermal, non-invasive nanosecond laser can lower intraocular pressure (IOP). It is as effective as pharmacological treatment, without the side effects and compliance issues associated with long-term use of eye drops. Due to its excellent safety profile, it is recommended in clinical guidelines as a first-line treatment for glaucoma, before starting medication.
- YAG laser used to perform specialized ophthalmic procedures, including capsulotomy, iridotomy, vitreolysis, and the treatment of angle-closure glaucoma.
OCT Angiography
The latest-generation digital angiography technology, OCT angiography (OCT-A), plays a key role in the diagnosis and management of macular diseases and retinal diseases in general, providing high-resolution images with excellent diagnostic accuracy. Additionally, by enabling detailed assessment of glaucomatous changes, it supports timely and appropriate disease management.
Glaucoma Management
Specialized ophthalmologists, in combination with state-of-the-art equipment, provide comprehensive services for the diagnosis, monitoring, and therapeutic management of glaucoma.
Specifically, the following are performed:
- Latest-generation Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) (Optovue Solix), with the ability to evaluate all modern biomarkers for the early detection of structural changes in glaucoma. In addition to conventional and classical methods, the clinic offers the most advanced capability to assess blood flow in the optic nerve through non-invasive, latest-generation OCT digital angiography. At the same time, imaging of the anterior segment and angle anatomy is available for angle-closure glaucoma.
- Visual field testing, for optimal and highly reliable recording and monitoring of functional visual disturbances.
- Corneal pachymetry, performed using multiple methods (OCT, specular microscopy, ultrasound).
At the same time, the most modern, painless, and effective treatments are applied across the full spectrum of glaucoma, using latest-generation lasers (Diode, YAG, SLT).
The physicians have extensive experience in the surgical management of cases not controlled with medication, using the most modern and minimally invasive MIGS (Micro-Invasive Glaucoma Surgery) techniques. Indicatively, the techniques applied include Kahook Dual Blade, iStent, and other MIGS technologies.
They also surgically manage more severe cases, with trabeculectomy and implantation of Baerveldt-type and Ahmed-type valves, depending on the severity of each case.
Surgical Unit
All procedures involving the eye and the orbital cavity are performed at the operating theatres of Metropolitan General using the most advanced techniques. The state-of-the-art medical equipment includes the Constellation LXT and the latest model of the Stellaris PC NG for specialized vitreoretinal, cataract, and glaucoma surgeries, along with a latest-generation electronic microscope with automated functions.
