The Patient at the Center of Care
Focusing on the patient, the goal of the fully specialized and highly trained medical and nursing staff is to provide continuous and comprehensive monitoring and treatment for hematology and oncology patients, as well as symptomatic and psychological support for both patients and their families, offering comprehensive services on a 24-hour basis.
Thrombophilia and Thromboembolic Disease Unit
Thrombophilia (inherited or acquired) is a predisposition of the blood to develop thrombosis, which may have significant consequences for the health of patients or otherwise healthy individuals.
During its operation at Metropolitan General, the Hematology-Oncology Clinic has managed a large number of patients with malignant diseases and thrombotic episodes, as well as healthy individuals with a predisposition to thromboembolic disease or a history of thrombosis.
This is an evolving field in hematology that has gained increasing importance, while available information is not always clear.
Collaboration with specialized centers abroad for rare and complex cases is currently being developed.
The Thrombophilia and Thromboembolic Disease Unit provides comprehensive services and counseling covering the full spectrum of inherited and acquired thrombophilia.
Based on current scientific literature and the guidelines of scientific societies in Greece and internationally, the specialized staff of the clinic individualizes the diagnostic approach, laboratory investigation and therapeutic intervention according to the specific characteristics of each patient.
The Unit provides services in the following areas:
- Diagnosis and management of acute or chronic thrombosis (deep vein thrombosis, superficial thrombosis and pulmonary embolism)
- Thrombophilia and pregnancy
- Investigation and monitoring of individuals with thrombophilia and with a personal or family history of thrombosis
- Investigation and monitoring of individuals with additional risk factors for thrombosis (reduced mobility, surgery, use of oral contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy, malignancy, presence of central venous catheters, history of hematological neoplasms or solid tumors)
- Diagnosis and management of patients with heparin-induced thrombocytopenia type II (HIT II)
