Cardiac surgery, one of the most demanding medical specialties in terms of both technological infrastructure and surgical expertise and experience, is a field to which particular emphasis has been given.
The Cardiac Surgery Department offers:
- A fully equipped and specialized Coronary Care Unit (CCU)
- State-of-the-art diagnostic technological support in Greece, including a Hemodynamics Laboratory, CT and MRI scanners with advanced cardiac imaging capabilities (heart, coronary arteries, aorta, and peripheral vessels), transesophageal echocardiography, stress echocardiography (stress echo), and specialized nuclear imaging techniques
- Fully equipped, modern operating theaters with intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography (dual-head echo systems) and dedicated imaging workstations connected to CT, MRI, and coronary angiography systems
- Cardiology beds equipped with advanced telemetry monitoring systems for 24-hour surveillance of post–cardiac surgery patients
The cardiac surgery teams of Metropolitan General are composed of highly specialized physicians, trained in leading international centers, with extensive experience in the management of cardiac surgical cases. They perform cardiac surgeries of all levels of complexity, including adult congenital and acquired heart diseases such as aneurysms, valve diseases (mechanical, biological, and homografts), and coronary artery bypass grafting (on-pump and off-pump), applying the most advanced surgical techniques.
Coronary artery bypass surgery using arterial grafts (arterial revascularization) is routinely performed. In addition, emergency management of acute coronary syndromes is available in collaboration with cardiologists through hybrid procedures (combining bypass surgery and angioplasty).
Heart Failure Center
Emphasis is placed on the surgical management of heart failure, including left and right ventricular assist devices and left ventricular remodeling surgery.
