3RD NEUROSURGERY CLINIC

The 3rd Neurosurgery Clinic works in the fields of:

  • Brain surgery
  • Spinal surgery
  • Peripheral nerves surgery
  • Functional neurosurgery

The Clinic covers the whole spectrum of modern clinical neurosurgery in terms of prevention, diagnosis, treatment and monitoring. Utilizing cutting-edge medical equipment, such the surgical microscope, endoscope, stereotactic neuronavigation, radiofrequencies and minimally invasive techniques, the Clinic manages and treats all diseases and conditions involving the Central Nervous System (brain and spinal cord), peripheral nerves, spinal column, as well as acute and chronic pain musculoskeletal and neuromuscular syndromes.

In particular:

Functional Neurosurgery

Functional Neurosurgery

Surgical management of motility disorders and Parkinson’s disease with Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) by implanting electrodes and neurostimulators. Surgical maanegement of various types of drug-resistant tremor and dystonia. Epilepsy surgery via epileptogenic sites removal or via neurostimulation techniques by implanting stimulators of the vagus nerve and BDS.

Pump therapy used to treat spasticity. Pain-pump

Pump therapy used to treat spasticity. Pain-pump

Spasticity is a symptom of several diseases resulting into social ‘impairment’ for people who, other than that, are completely socially active. Unfortunately, spasticity afflicts young-aged individuals with quite frequent conditions, such as multiple sclerosis and brain palsy (especially in children). It may develop following a brain or spinal cord injury, usually during car accidents, in which our country is unfavored with high incidence rates, and finally, it may exhibit as a late-onset complication of a stroke.

Neurovascular Surgery

Neurovascular Surgery

For vascular diseases of the brain and spinal cord, i.e. management of aneurysms or other vascular malformations (microsurgery and endovascular surgery).

Neuro-oncology

Neuro-oncology

Surgical treatement of Central Nervous System tumors by applying modern microsurgery and neuronavigation techniques, and with frame-based and frameless stereotactic surgical systems. Skull base tumor management (meningiomas and acoustic neuromas) and pituary adenomas.

Hydrocephaly

Hydrocephaly

Management of adult hydrocephalic diseases by implanting modern flow-regulating hydrocephalic valves for ventriculoperitoneal drainage and the use of endoscope-ventriculoscope, and conduction of endoscopic 3rd ventriculostomy (ETV).

Neurotraumatology

Neurotraumatology

Cranio-cerebral and spinal injuries in cooperation with the ICU, and 24-hour intracranial pressure monitoring, using fiber optic sensors.

Spinal Microsurgery

Spinal Microsurgery

Using a modern, last generation microscope to perform microdiscectomies on the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine, through minimal surgical incisions measuring 2.5-3 cm. Microsurgical techniques ensure reduced hospital stay, i.e. 24 hours.

Endoscopic spinal surgery

Endoscopic spinal surgery

Using rigid and flexible endoscopes, we treat surgical spinal conditions through a very small incision, applying Minimally Invasive Surgery Techniques, without general anesthesia, without muscle group surgical dissection, with cutaneous incision measuring 0.5-1cm, and with less than 24 hours hospital stay.

Percutaneous endoscopic stabilization – spondylodesis Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery Approach

Percutaneous endoscopic stabilization – spondylodesis Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery Approach

  • Discoplasty with hydrogel infusion via a very fine needle in a special frame, using the C-arm to reconstitute the degenerated disc and manage disc-induced spinal pain by infusing gel solution
  • Application of electrothermal nucleoplasty and radiofrequencies for spinal pain syndromes (e.g. posterior facet syndrome, sacroiliitis)
  • Percutaneous discectomy
  • Percutaneous spondyloplasty and kyphoplasty
  • Percutaneous transcervical and interbody spondylodesis (spinal fusion)
Complex Spine Surgery

Complex Spine Surgery

Complex transcorporeal and transcervical spondylodeses, anterior and posterior on the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine, to treat degenerative disorders, deforming diseases, and spinal neoplasms.

Cervical Spine Surgery

Cervical Spine Surgery

  • Cervical anterior and posterior foraminotomy
  • Anterior microdiscectomy – Somatectomy and fixation
  • Artificial cervical intervertebral disc
  • Spinal column and bone marrow tumors
  • Cervical laminectomy
Thoracic Spine Surgery

Thoracic Spine Surgery

  • Discectomy, laminectomy, somatectomy
  • Spinal column and bone marrow tumors
  • Spondylodesis
Lumbar and Sacral Spine Surgery

Lumbar and Sacral Spine Surgery

  • Transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF)
  • Posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF)
  • Anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF)
Invasive Pain Management

Invasive Pain Management

Application of minimally invasive techniques inducing denervation, aimed relieving the pain experienced by the patient. They may also be applied in the treatment of chronic pain syndromes uncontrollable with conservative management.

  • Intraforaminal nerve-blocking, facet joints infiltration
  • Nerve-blocking and percutaneous chemical neurolysis
  • Intra-articular facet injections
Neuralgias and Pain, Musculoskeletal and Neuromuscular Syndromes

Neuralgias and Pain, Musculoskeletal and Neuromuscular Syndromes

  • Implantation of permanent and constant drug delivery devices to manage pain and spasticity
  • Implantation of constant intrathecal or intrabdominal drug delivery devices
  • Bone marrow stimulation and peripheral neurostimulation using implantable devices
  • Motor cortex stimulation
  • RF-ablation
  • Cryopexy
