Clinical Interest
Extensive experience in surgery, with more than 15,000 procedures performed so far, covering the whole spectrum of Orthopedics, Reconstruction and Traumatology.
Great emphasis is placed on Adult Reconstructive Orthopedics and Traumatology, with more than 7,000 procedures performed so far.
Innovations:
- The first performance of hip arthroplasty in Greece, without cement, and ceramic arthroplasties, 1982
- The first seminar in arthroplasty with live transmission of surgical procedures in 1986, and since then, establishment of these seminars with the conduction of 4 live transmissions on average per year, during which dozens of orthopedics specialists were trained on new data
- Since 1991, computer-aided surgery planning and selection of implants – a worldwide first.
- On my initiative, founding of hip and knee Divisions of the Hellenic Association of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (HAOT) and the Hellenic Society of Hip & Knee Research which I chair. With the joint proposal of Professor Ilias Lambiris, establishment of the Division of Intramedullary Nailing of HAOT and joint organizing of various related workshops.
- One of the first to apply computer-assisted orthopedic surgery (CAOS) and utilization of surgical navigation systems. Under the common protocol of the HSS Hospiptal, application of the posterior minimally invasive surgery (PoMIS) in hip arthroplasties.
- The largest series of arthroplasties worldwide in patients with congenital hip dislocation. Monitoring of patient post-arthroplasty course with the EBRA software.

Three chapters in books written in English: two in books by the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS), and one book by the European Federation of National Associations of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (EFORT). All three books were related to the hip. These publications were cited more than 700 times, with an average of 4.53 citations per publication in foreign journals and books in Medline

Research
Configuration of Research Infrastructure:
Configuration of the only, on a Schools of Medicine basis, Biomechanics Laboratory in Greece for research training. Development of software for the planning and simulation of major hip surgeries. Undertaking of a large research program, through the Operational Programme for Research and Technology (EPET II), to develop custom-made arthroplasties- these outcomes are now followed in arthroplasties performed by a Swiss company.
